Everything Actors Need To Know Before Their Headshot Session | Indianapolis & Cincinnati Creative Headshot Photography

Your typical headshot is very simple; a photo that shows who you are. For actors, however, your headshot is more than that. Your headshot is your first impression—it’s what casting directors see before you ever walk into the room. A professional headshot captures your authentic look, highlights your natural “type,” and shows that you take your acting career seriously. This first impression can lead to more auditions and better opportunities—when it’s done right.

Whether it’s your first time having headshots taken or you’ve been in front of the camera many times, it’s still important to make sure you get it right. Your headshots should be updated annually, but it’s normal to still feel some nerves ahead of your photo shoot even if it’s not your first time. If you’re an actor wondering how to nail your headshots, these tips are for you.

How Do Headshots Help Actors Be Successful?

A headshot has a very clear purpose for a casting director: does this person match the look of the character? However, there is so much more to it than just showing what you look like. A picture really is worth a thousand words, and the energy you give off in your portrait can either help or hurt you get a call back.

An acting headshot session is in-depth and should include different vibes that match different roles you want to play. With a traditional acting headshot session, you’ll get a few photos to cover your bases and show the variety that you can portray. If you opt for a more creative headshot session, however, we can include photos of you in a particular scene, to provide a before and after comparison. This gives you the opportunity to show off how well you can adapt into a role, and show off some of your current work. If this is something you’re interested in, please let me know when you reach out to book, so we can coordinate together ahead of time.

What Type Of Actors Need Headshots?

No matter what sort of acting you do, a headshot is an important part of the process. Whether you do theater, film, or commercial acting, a headshot will help you land the roles you are looking for. That being said, the variety needed in headshots for a commercial actor will be different than needed for a theater actor, so it’s important to let me know the type of acting you do ahead of time. Additionally, I photograph actors of any age: child actors, young adult actors, or adult actors.

Where Are Actor Headshots Taken?

Typically, agencies want a simple shot or two, so it’s customary to have your headshots taken indoors, in studio. That being said, if you would like these photos to be taken outdoors, we can definitely do that! For outdoor actor headshots, I would recommend a relatively neutral background, so that it doesn’t overpower you. There are definitely outdoor options at my studio that can add a unique touch to your headshots without detracting from you!

What To Wear For Professional Actor Headshot Photos

What you wear for your headshot should feel like you on your best day—simple, clean, and true to the roles you want to book. It’s important that you wear something that makes you
feel confident and comfortable, because that confidence will come through in every shot.

Since some variety is helpful for landing different roles, I recommend layering in your outfit, like adding a denim jacket or cardigan, or even bringing a few outfit options to change into. I’m always happy to help my clients choose what to wear if they bring multiple outfits! This helps you get different looks without having to schedule multiple sessions.

No matter how many outfits you want to fit in, I always recommend my clients stick with solid colors and avoid busy patterns or logos, as they can distract from your face. Choose well-fitted clothing that flatters your shape without being too tight or oversized. Neutrals and rich tones (like black, cream, olive, navy, or burgundy) tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your expression.

I always recommend that clients avoid neons, or anything bright and distracting that causes noise and distracts from you. After all, you are the star of these portraits!

When it comes to hair and makeup, unfortunately there is no one size fits all answer. The important thing is that you look and feel your best. These photos are all about you, so don’t do a particular hair or makeup style just because you feel like you’re supposed to. As long as you look in the mirror before coming to your session, and you feel 200% amazing, that’s all that matters!

Showing Your Personality In Your Actor Headshots

I’ve found that the key to a great headshot session is to have FUN! Once you’re relaxed and not worried about the camera, your true personality starts to shine through, and that’s the key. I am a goof at heart, so there will be no lack of laughs. If we’re going for a particular mood for a few photos, I’ll find some music that matches and prompt you to pose in a way that fits the vibe.

Posing Effectively For Actor Headshots

For traditional actor headshots, posing is very simple. There’s no need to get complicated! It’s important that you let me know ahead of time what sort of “looks” you want to tackle during your session (other than just your natural look of course), so that I can pose you in a way that matches the look and vibe. Certain vibes call for more inviting versus more ominous posing. I am deliberate with these poses based off that vibe. One of the benefits of working with an experienced professional photographer is that they have years of experience and training in how to pose people naturally; you don’t have to know how to pose before your photo shoot. That’s my job!

What To Bring To Your Actor Headshots

For a typical headshot session, you don’t need to bring anything but some outfit variety and your winning smile. Of course, it’s never a bad idea to bring some water and stay hydrated—it’s great for your skin!

If you are hoping for a more creative, in depth session, there are some props you may want to bring. This would be props or items that match the particular scene or character you are transforming into. If you aren’t sure what to bring and what to leave, I’m happy to help!
